Publius Cornelius Tacitus was a leading advocate of senatorial historiography. Known for the brilliance of his style and sharp moral judgments, Tacitus lived from 56 to 120 A.D. His two most famous works are the Histories and the Annals. A copy of the second Medicean manuscript of Annals Tacitus’ Annals set out to cover the history of the Roman Empire from the death of Augustus and the accession of Tiberius to the later part of Nero’s reign.
